CBI appoints Douwe Oppedijk as CEO

Commercial Bank International (CBI) announced that its board of directors has named Douwe J Oppedijk to serve as the bank's chief executive officer.
Previously, Oppedijk served four years as Country Manager of the bank's UAE operations, where he developed the consumer banking division as a second main business line to positive revenue levels. His key achievements include introducing the ABN AMRO Credit Card and establishing it as one of the leading and preferred cards in the UAE. Key achievements include introducing the call centre and travel service centre concepts to the bank's portfolio of services and expanding trade finance activities to include large local corporates.
Hamad Al Mutawa, the bank's Chairman of the board said that the CBI board unanimously selected Oppedjik based on his track record in leading regional and international financial organisations, as well as his strong executive and personal qualities as well as his diverse geographical experience.
"Our search for a new leader to further build CBI to sustained success has been focused and thorough," said Al Mutawa. "A core screening team of board members established a broad field of candidates and interviewed many individuals. We then recommended the strongest contenders to the board as finalists. Each was interviewed by the entire board, and Douwe was our top choice."
"Douwe came to our attention because of his experience, which spans across strategic banking management, operational/ transactional banking management and customer focus. He has strong business acumen, a successful commercial background backed up by a solid execution capability. His added advantage is that he is sensitive to cultural differences and he has worked across the globe geographically covering Europe, United States, Far East & Middle East Asia. This makes him to be a person with strong market intelligence and understanding."

Oppedijk is active in his role, having taken up his new duties on 11th of May 2008.

Douwe J Oppedijk was named chief executive officer of CBI on 11th of May 2008.
Oppedijk previously spent 3 years at Saudi Hollandi Bank as Chief Operating Officer and subsequently Acting Managing Director. His leadership was marked by successful efforts to managing a challenging core banking post implementation that created stability and restored customer confidence levels. His efforts saw the bolstering of Saudi Hollandi Bank's product line and the establishment of a strong leadership team. Oppedijk was also instrumental in reorganizing and upgrading the IT infrastructure, consumer banking facilities while efficiently managing costs. In his capacity as Country Manager in ABN Amro BANK Indonesia Oppedijk saw the bank through the Asian financial crisis and developed a consumer banking plan that bolstered revenue to positive levels.
Oppedijk was named Chief Operating Officer of Saudi Hollandi Bank in Q3 2005 and was given additional responsibilities as Acting Managing Director subsequently. Prior to this, he held a previous assignment at ABN Amro as the Country Manager of UAE from 1996 - 2000. Earlier, he held a variety of general management, operations, and corporate relationship roles.
Oppedijk began his career as a self employed professional in the field of real estate development in 1977.
Hailing from the Netherlands, Oppedijk is co-founder and first Chairman of the Netherlands Business Council - UAE and Board member of Netherlands Chamber of Commerce -Jakarta, Indonesia. He was also a member on the boards of Jeddah Preparatory School - Jeddah, KSA; Bandung International School - Bandung, Indonesia and Netherlands International School Jakarta, Indonesia.
Oppedijk is also a certified investment advisor, dealer and broker by the Capital Market authority - Bapepam, Indonesia. He earned a masters degree in international law in 1979 from Netherlands Free University. Oppedijk is married with two children.
About Commercial Bank International (CBI)
CBI started operations on May 1991 with one branch in Ras Al Khaimah and one in Dubai with a paid up capital of Dhs44m and authorized capital of Dhs100m. The paid up capital was increased to Dhs1.089bn as of December 2007. Currently CBI has a network of 10 branches and 41 ATMs spread across the Emirates, in addition to the Call Centre and plans to extend its network with five new branches in 2008. The staff strength is 557, of which 28% are UAE Nationals.
