Dubai Maritime City draws praise from Transport Canada Maritime

During the meeting, the visiting delegation provided a comprehensive overview of Dubai Maritime City, highlighting the most recent developments in the City.

Following the briefing on Dubai Maritime City, Transport Canada Maritime officials commended the scale and vision of the unique maritime development. During the meeting, the delegation was provided with a detailed briefing on Transport Canada Maritime's rules and regulations, and systems and mechanisms with regard to registration of leisure yachts, an area in which Dubai Maritime City aims to cooperate with Canada so as to benefit from international best practices.

Michael Henderson, Regional Director General, Pacific Region, Transport Canada commented positively on the very large scale of the undertaking by Dubai Maritime City with respect to both its commitment to global marine industry standards and the scale and quality of its marine infrastructure development. He also noted Dubai Maritime City's intent to upgrade their vessel licensing system and offered to provide information on how this is managed in Canada.

Earlier this year, Dubai Maritime City Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE Transport Authority (NTA) to open licensing and registration bureaus for commercial ships, yachts and leisure boats throughout Dubai. The MoU is expected to help enhance the NTA's ability to monitor and manage marine vessel registration, licensing and other services through the new bureaus. Dubai Maritime City's cooperation with Transport Canada Maritime could significantly help streamline licensing and registration processes in Dubai.

On completion, Dubai Maritime City will feature a fully integrated community for business, industrial activities, residential and academic and recreational amenities designed with a unique maritime-themed lifestyle.

Transport Canada works with industry and the public to regulate, promote and enforce safe and sustainable marine practices. The department oversees the safety, security and marine infrastructure of small vessels, large commercial vessels and pleasure crafts.
