The performances are set for June 18th and 20th at the Cairo Opera House and Bibliotheca Alexandrina respectively.

The ELCS was established as an initiative by the National Committee of Viral Hepatitis. Appointed by the Ministry of Health and Population, the Committee has made great strides towards fighting the disease. The ELCS now serves as a sustainable vehicle to manage a national fund to support those afflicted with the disease. It aims to raise LE100m annually for treatment, liver transplants and awareness efforts to curb disease prevalence.

"Liver diseases are one of the principal causes of death in Egypt," said Dr Wahid Doss, Chairman of the National Committee. "Around 12 and 4.5% of the population have been exposed to HCV and HBV respectively. The creation of the ELCS demonstrates how public-private partnerships can help alleviate the social and economic burden of viral hepatitis."

Maria Pages' two performances will kick off the ELCS' ambitious fundraising agenda. Following an epic performance in Egypt last year, the upcoming shows are expected to mobilize thousands in support of this national cause.

"The ELCS will act as a unifying vehicle to harness public support against viral hepatitis," said Mrs Youssreyia Loza, Chairwoman of the ELCS.

"This groundbreaking launch marks the beginning of our journey. Collective efforts of community participants, both corporates and individuals, will help save millions of lives and embrace an era of hepatitis-free generations."

With their solid support, the National Committee for Control of Viral Hepatitis, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, the Embassy of Spain in Cairo and the American Chamber of Commerce have made the event possible.

In addition a number of sponsors are contributing, including: CEPSA Egypt SA; Beltone; Suez Cement Company; Sofitel; Hisham Khazindar; Nile Holding; Coca Cola; Apache; Mobinil; Roche and Schering-Plough.
