UAE airlines will have unlimited access to Syrian airports, except Damascus', following an agreement between the Civil Aviation Authorities of the two countries.

The Air Services Agreement (ASA) was initialled in Damascus on June 19 by Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Major General Hazem Al Khadraa, Director General of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, according to WAM, the UAE news agency.

Besides, the two parties also signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will increase significantly the number of scheduled flights between Damascus and the UAE's three main cities. Syrian and UAE carriers will now fly 14 times a week between Damascus and each of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and 7 times a week between Damascus and Sharjah.

These agreements follow an increase in traffic between the two countries and the launch of several new routes between airports in the Gulf and Syrian airports, in particular Damascus and Aleppo's international airports.

The Pearl of Syria, a recently launched private airliner, is expected to benefit from these agreements. The air carrier, which is a joint-venture between Al-Aqeelah and Cham Holding, is expected to take over most of Syrianair's medium-range routes to the Gulf.
