If only, there was a platform where donors and recipients could come together! And this is exactly what Muscat Private Hospital (MPH) intends to do.
As June 14 is universally celebrated as the World Blood Donor Day, it is an appropriate time to share information about the importance of blood donation.
To mark the same, MPH, will be organising a blood donation camp on July 2, 2008 at its premises and is open from 9.00am-2.00pm.
The donation is open to everyone and anyone who is interested in donating blood, including the hospital staff.
This year's theme "Giving Blood Regularly" is an effort to commit volunteer blood donors to donate regularly and over the long-term. This sense of social engagement and belonging displayed can be the foundation of a stable voluntary donor pool. It is an opportunity for everyone to facilitate these givers of 'life' and for national transfusion services to reaffirm their efforts in providing people with quality care.
This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by MPH is aimed at highlighting the role blood donors play in saving the lives and improving the health of thousands.
It also promotes awareness about the availability, safety and appropriate use of blood and blood products.
The resolution passed by the World Health Assembly in 2005 recognised that voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors who donate blood regularly are integral to safe, adequate and sustainable blood supply.
"The clinical demand for blood is rising throughout the world to support advancements in medical and surgical procedures. Though the pattern of blood usage varies in different countries, there is still a great need for it in the treatment of complications during pregnancy and childbirth and severe childhood anaemia. The honour, spirit and resources of the people comes forth with neighbours helping neighbours in need — during earthquakes, floods, fires, storms and also for the deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood,"
explained Gerard Strong, Hospital Director, MPH, while talking about the importance of blood donation.
