Family Computer School at Dubai Women's College

  • United Arab Emirates: Thursday, June 26 - 2008 at 12:46
  • PRESS RELEASE

Dubai Women's College (DWC) students planned and managed a family Computer School during the last few weeks of the academic year.

The program was designed and organized by a total of 46 second year Diploma students (PM section) free of charge for their families, relatives, friends and members of the community.

During DWC's Celebration of Partnerships held last week at the College, the family computer school project won the Community Partnerships Award for its outstanding service delivered to several members of the local community.

Carried out as a major project during last semester's curriculum, the computer training project 's aim of delivering this program is to transfer students' IT knowledge and skills to other female members in the community and gain an overall understanding of the community service field.

During the first semester, students set the objectives, outcomes, expectations, budgets and the timeline of the project, and market it during Various College activities such as the annual Bazaar. As a result, 93 Emirati women (employees and housewives) registered for the course. Students then planned and designed the teaching/training material during the second semester.

The program covered the basic levels of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, Internet, Outlook, Movie Maker and Photoshop. Students delivered training sessions to all female participants on a daily basis. Each and every student contributed to the course delivery, class management and assistance, where they shared smooth division of labor. The program lasted for four weeks after which participants got a certificate of completion of this IT training program.

During the 4 weeks of training, participants were asked to evaluate their teaching teams on daily basis. This immediate feedback helped in making the delivery process more productive to both, trainers and trainees.

"What the participants liked the most was that trainers showed a high level of professionalism, patience and deep respect for them. They also praised the methods and techniques used by students in order to simplify the material delivered, and their willingness to devote extra time to help them practice the needed skills," noted Sana Daoud, DWC Business and IT faculty.
