Dubai Chamber organizes awareness seminar on anti-dumping in the GCC

Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting a two-day seminar/workshop on the Role of Technical Secretariat for Anti-Dumping in Serving in the GCC Industry, held at its premises on June 29 and 30.

Organised under the patronage of HE Eng Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economy and in association with the Ministry of Economy and Technical Secretariat for Anti-Dumping in the GCC, this awareness raising seminar helped the participants increase their knowledge on anti-dumping regulations in GCC in the light of the role of the Technical Secretariat for Anti-Dumping in addressing the harmful practices in international trade and explaining the WTO agreements on the subject and its countervailing measures.

The event was inaugurated by HE Saeed Abdalla Al Roken, Director of Industrial Development, Ministry of Economy, Atiq Juma Nasib, Executive Director, of Commercial Services Department - Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry and HE Rihan M. Fayez, Director General of the Technical Secretariat for Anti-Dumping in GCC who also spoke about The Role of the Secretariat for Anti-Dumping in combating harmful practices in the international trade.

Mr. Nasser G. Al Assmi, Deputy Director General, Technical Secretariat for Anti-Dumping gave a talk on Procedures and conditions of accepting complaints against harmful practices in the international trade, and Mr Karim M. Al Toumi, International Trade Law Expert of the Secretariat discussed in length about the Conception of harmful practices in the international trade and means of combating these practices according to the WTO agreements and the unified law of GCC countries and also spoke about Investigation procedures of cases concerning illegal practices of importing.

Atiq Juma Nasib, Executive Director, Commercial Services Department, Dubai Chamber said that, "Anti-dumping has rapidly increased worldwide and has become a global issue. For example, East Asia accounts for a large and growing share of worldwide anti-dumping activity. East Asian countries have long been the main targets of Anti-dumping actions as they are subject to about twice as many cases as either North American or Western European countries and in order to maintain the effectiveness of anti-dumping process it is very important to instill transparency, consistency and procedural fairness in the conduct of anti-dumping investigations, injury determinations and dispute settlement."

Atiq added, "At Dubai Chamber it's our mission to represent and protect the interests of the emirate's business community besides enhancing their knowledge on critical issues like anti-dumping, which is a subject of great concern and interest for people from different economic sectors. This two-day event, comprising experts from the Technical Secretariat of GCC council, offers an excellent opportunity for the business community to benefit from the expertise of these speakers in the area of economic and international trade."

The workshop on Monday, June 30, will give an overview of how to make a complaint against dumping, the most important sources to prove damages and dumping and the preventative measures against increase of imports; which will be followed by a general discussion session.
