Vodafone

The country's second licence has now formally been given to Vodafone, the world's largest mobile telecommunications company.

Starting in early 2009, customers will be free to choose the company that best serves their needs in terms of price, service, and features.

"Since ictQATAR was established in 2005, we have looked forward to this day," said Dr. Al-Jaber.

"We are delighted that it has arrived and warmly welcome Vodafone's commitment to build a state-of-the-art infrastructure to serve Qatar."

Qtel

Dr. Al Jaber explained that because Vodafone and Qtel will now compete for every customer, each company will strive to outdo the other as they offer products and services, and packages of products and services for better value.

Consumers will see better service over time, friendlier and more responsive customer service, more attractive prices, and innovative new products.

After the conclusion of another open and public process, ictQATAR will soon announce the award of a license to an additional fixed-line service provider.

Dr. Al-Jaber said:
"Bringing full competition to Qatar is a key element of ictQATAR's goal to connect people to the technologies that enrich their lives, drive economic development, and inspire confidence in our nation's future."

In 2010, ictQATAR will conduct a Market Review and evaluate the state of the telecommunications market.

If ictQATAR determines that individual and business consumers - as well as the economy itself - would benefit from the competition of additional competitors, the Council would consider a process to issue one or more additional licenses.
