"Greater support needed" to encourage take-up of higher education
- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, July 03 - 2008 at 10:50
- PRESS RELEASE
Students looking to continue their education and professionals returning to take master's degrees after a time in the workforce require additional support, according to executives at one of the UAE's leading educational institutions.
To respond to this need in the market, BUiD has designed special English language and pre-masters courses that will enable interested students to bridge the skills gap. These courses will run over the summer.
"Taking a degree at a Masters level is a big commitment in terms of the dedication and the amount of study required, and it also requires students to deploy a higher level of research skills. We have decided to develop these specific courses because it's clear that every student has specific needs, and many require additional support in preparing to pursue a degree at this level," said Dr. Abdullah Al Shamsi, Vice Chancellor at the British University in Dubai.
The English for Academic Purpose (EAP) course aims at improving English language skills for academic and professional use, while the pre-masters workshops will cover topics such as learning styles, referencing, searching the internet, finding information and taking notes and more.
BUiD's own research indicates that a significant number of students seeking master's degrees are returning to education after a significant period outside of academic life. As a result, they often look for additional help in adapting to new research methods.
"Returning to study can be daunting and the workshops will help people start with a full command of the skills necessary to study effectively and complete a masters degree," said Mary Mayall, the Language Centre Manager.
Applications for both programmes are now open at The British University in Dubai.
