An international standard for tomatoes has been adopted, which ends the 7-year debate between countries on what qualifies as a proper tomato, agencies have reported. The new standard says tomatoes may come in one of four varieties: round, ribbed, oblong or elongated, or cherry tomatoes and cocktail tomatoes. They also must be whole, clean, free from 'foreign smell', free of pests and fresh in appearance. According to the World Health Organization, the classification will make it easier for regulators to impose safety standards while trading.
