Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, received the awards - three gold and one silver - from Robert P. Thornton, President of IDEA, at a gala ceremony held on the sidelines of the IDEA conference, which ran from 29 June - 2 July and brought together a distinguished gathering of industry experts from the district energy sector.

In his acceptance speech, Bin Shafar said: "These awards are a great honour for us and affirm the industry's recognition of the strides Empower has made to further the advancement of the energy efficient cooling service in the region.

"This prominent recognition confirms Empower's leadership, highlights the company's strengths and future potential and validates our commitment to delivering on our promises. Empower's solid business strategy and our hard working and talented team are the main reasons behind today's achievement. It also underpins our position as the largest district cooling service provider in the region."

Empower received the three gold awards for the total square footage committed to district cooling on the UAE level; the total number of buildings committed on the UAE level, and the total number of buildings on a corporate level in the GCC. The silver award came its way for the total square footage committed on a corporate level in the GCC.

Empower was established in 2003 to provide energy-efficient services that are cost-effective and environmentally friendly to Dubai and the Gulf region.

IDEA is a non-profit trade association that annually hosts a conference and trade show to showcase latest technologies and equipment in the district energy industry. The annual conferences give attendees - including energy professionals, consultancies, government agencies and system developers - the opportunity to learn more about district cooling from a global perspective and meet with a variety of vendors and suppliers.

About EMPOWER

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) is a joint venture between Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone (TECOM) Investments and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), created to provide energy-efficient district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments. Empower plans to diversify into other energy efficiency and conservation services.

Empower's district cooling systems (DCS) provide effective and efficient means of air conditioning. Water is cooled in central plants and distributed through a network of piping systems to individual customer buildings. DCS achieves economies of scale by using centralised plants instead of individual cooling units in each building. The centralised system results in reduced capital and operating costs, thus reducing air-conditioning set-up and energy costs per building. Empower is set to become one of the largest district cooling companies in the region.
