The regional meeting for Arab States was organized on the 'Implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage: Inventory-making'.
The objectives of the meeting were to examine different questions relating to the implementation of the 2003 convention; to exchange of experiences in the field of methodologies for the establishment of national inventories; and to discuss of safeguarding approaches of intangible cultural heritage.
The 425-page book is divided into eight basic underlying parts and includes 25 working papers, which discuss the experiences of different regions on the preservation of intangible heritage.
The meeting was the result of cooperation between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, the UNESCO Committee on Intangible Heritage, and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), with the sponsorship of Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of ADACH.
The book includes three introductory articles: the first by Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of ADACH, which reviewed the efforts of preserving the cultural heritage of United Arab Emirates.
The second was by Bilal Rabie Al Budoor, Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs, at Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, which addressed the need to document the heritage of the United Arab Emirates.
The third was by Cesar Moreno Triana, Programmes Specialist at the Department of Intangible Heritage and a UNESCO representative, which stressed the urgent need for cultural heritage protection.
The second and third parts of the book focused on previous experiences and methods of preserving intangible heritage in Japan, Vietnam, Mali, Egypt, and Morocco.
The fourth part of the book discusses joint Arab initiatives of preserving intangible heritage, past and present.
The themes of the fifth and sixth parts of the book focused on the evaluation of experiences in Bahrain, Lebanon, Sudan, Oman, Mauritania, the UAE, Morocco, Algeria and Yemen.
The focus of the seventh and eighth parts of the book was on a variety of experiments in Syria, Oman, Libya, Palestine, Jordan, and the initiatives of ADACH.
The book is relevant to people who are interested in intangible cultural heritage in the Arab World.
Abu Dhabi prepares book on intangible heritage
The Department of Intangible Heritage at the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage has prepared a book on the proceedings of the first regional meeting regarding intangible Arab heritage, which was held in Abu Dhabi on 31st March - 4th April, 2007.
