The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) recently hosted the first-ever ITU-R Working Party 5D 'IMT Systems' in the UAE, which was sponsored by du, the integrated telecom service provider in the UAE.

The UAE meeting successfully achieved consensus on the technical requirements and methods for evaluating IMT-Advanced, paving the way for the accelerated development of complex radio interface technologies and supporting systems.

In addition, matters associated with the radio spectrum resources necessary for IMT-Advanced were also discussed.

The WP 5D is the lead group at the ITU for the overall maintenance of existing and development of new recommendations on IMT-2000, also known as the Third Generation Mobile Systems (3G) and beyond.

Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Board Member & Director General, said:

'The UAE's hosting of the WP 5D reflects the TRA's contribution in establishing the role of the UAE in supporting the telecom sector regionally and internationally. This is the first time that an ITU event has been held in the Middle East. We hope to be given the opportunity to host many more meetings in the future.
