The award was established under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and in memory of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.
The discussion, attended by Mohammed Khalaf Mazrouei Director General of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), highlighted the importance of building greater understanding between Arab and French cultures - with translation serving as the mechanism to bridge the gap between civilizations.
The event in the Salle du Haut Conseil of the the Arab World Institute, a symbol of the partnership between France and the Arab world and one of Paris's most admired architectural symbols, was also attended by Zaki Nseibeh, vice president of ADACH, and Turki Al Dakhil a member of the advisory board of Sheikh zayed Book Award, Dominique Baudis, President of the Arab World Institute, and an elite audience of Arab cultural figures including writers, artists and publishers.
The discussion was moderated by Dr. Waciny Laredj, winner of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Literature in 2007. Also on the panel were:
Dr. Georges Zinaty, 2007 Sheikh Zayed Book Award Winner for Translation Kadhim Jihad, writer, translator and Professor at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales Gilbert Grand-guillaume, a leading academic who has published several works on Arabic cultures and language.
"It is one of our objectives to encourage translation of literature in various domains, today's event is an embodiment of our serious efforts to spread awareness about the value of the award outside the Arab World,"
Said Rashed Aloraimi, Secretary General of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.
