Armed with a three-iron and driver, 72-year old Player - who keeps in shape with 1,000 sit-ups a day - smashed over two dozen balls down what will be the 18-hole Saadiyat Beach Golf Course's driving range.

Player told a gathering of co-designers and delegates from Tourism Development & Investment Company - Abu Dhabi's leading tourism asset developer which is transforming the 27 square kilometre Saadiyat Island, which lies just 500 metres offshore the UAE capital city, into an international leisure, residential and cultural destination - that the world-class, championship-level course is ready-made to 'host a major international tournament' and will substantially elevate the emirate's 'golfing destination status.'

With construction at the Saadiyat Beach Golf Course well ahead of schedule, Player also revealed the project is all-set to open in the third quarter of 2009.
