Aviation medicine is a branch of preventive or occupational medicine and this specialty strives to treat or prevent conditions to which aircrews and air travelers are susceptible, applies medical knowledge to the human factors in aviation and is thus a critical component of aviation safety.

Problems range from life support measures to recognizing an ear block in an infant traveling on an airliner with elevated cabin pressure altitude.

Dr. Ali Yassin Faeq Al Barudi, ENT specialist at Welcare DTC discusses the risks of flying for air travelers. Outlining the risks, he points out that air travel leads discomfort in the ears whereby hearing gets somewhat muffled. "Symptoms of this are pain or discomfort in the ear, feeling of fullness in the ear, slight hearing loss, ringing in the ear or dizziness."

"The cause is rapid changes in altitude and air pressure. It usually happens during the descent of airplane where negative middle ear pressure retracts the tympanic membrane inward.

Dr. Barudi's advice on when to seek medical advice is that if the symptoms don't disappear within few hours or if the pain persists, the patient must see the doctor who specializes in the care of ear disorders (otolaryngologist). "Normally during summer, when a lot of people are traveling, we find an increased number of patients suffering from ear problems."
