Maurice Flanagan CBE, Executive Vice Chairman of Emirates Airline and Group, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Liverpool.

Recognised for his leadership, innovation and influence in the aviation industry, Mr Flanagan was presented with a Doctor of Laws in the University's 2008 honours list. He received it during a recent ceremony in Liverpool's renowned Philharmonic Hall, amidst the university's graduating students.

Mr Flanagan said: "I am truly flattered at being chosen to receive this honorary degree. As a graduate of the University, I have fond memories of my studies and have thoroughly enjoyed being back here to receive this great honour."

The honorary list for the city's European Capital of Culture year saw 12 esteemed figures receive honorary degrees for their services to society. Others included the Rt. Hon. Lord Sainsbury, Lord Derby, Lord Rees (President of the Royal Society), Trevor Phillips (Chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission), Jose Manuel Barroso, (President of the European Commission).

Professor Kelvin Everest, the University of Liverpool's Public Orator, said: "We have honoured Maurice Flanagan for his remarkable personal contribution, to aviation in general and to Emirates in particular, a business whose rate of expansion presents what he describes as 'a continuous daily challenge'. This is a challenge which he clearly relishes and thrives on."
