Survivors of domestic violence and other sorts of abuse, who have taken refuge at the DFWAC after having to abandon their homes due to unforeseen cruel circumstances, are taking the first steps towards self empowerment.

As they await the resolution of the various aspects of their cases, residents of DFWAC will have the opportunity to attend the English language courses offered by the British Council in Dubai.

As part of the support services that the DFWAC offers to the victims to improve their opportunities to re-integrate in the society with ease as well as gain new perspective to help them protect themselves, the Foundation is actively engaged in offering residents different types of functional training including English language courses courtesy of the British Council in Dubai.

In cooperation with the British Council tutors, the social workers at the DFWAC evaluated the type and level of courses required before initiating the learning processes.

Emanating from their belief in creating opportunities for self development, capacity building and contributing effectively to the society they are operating in, the British Council in Dubai have donated their time to tutor the survivors of DFWAC in an aim to help them resolve some of their obstacles due to poor communication that can impede the process of their cases.

The British Council works in 110 countries worldwide to build relationships and understanding between the UK and other countries and to increase appreciation of the UK's ideas and achievements overseas.

They work with their partners in the UAE to provide opportunities for the local community in education, English language teaching, professional development and teacher training, the creative arts and science.

"Providing people with opportunities is at the heart of what we do. We are therefore delighted to work with the DFWAC and offer free English lessons to these survivors of domestic violence, to help them regain their dignity and self-confidence," said Paul Sellers, Director UAE, British Council.

The English language teacher who has played a key role in the success of this project says, "It's so rewarding to be able to make so much difference to their lives, and be a part of their personal growth."

Seher Mir, Human Rights Officer, DFWAC, said:

"Some of the survivors sheltered by DFWAC do not know any language except their own and teaching them English will definitely ease up the communication process. The healing process of course will be easier as we will be able to communicate better with them to help them feel less alienated and engage in our small society which will contribute positively to their overall wellbeing. We are very grateful to the British Council's team who have voluntary offered their time to teach English language to the residents at the Foundation. Their noble initiative is already making a difference."

DFWAC is the only licensed shelter in Dubai set to protect women and children who have been exposed to domestic violence, physical abuse and human trafficking.

This non profit organization was established in 2007 in Dubai under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister, UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to offer victims protection and support in line with international human rights laws and treaties.
