"Pearl diving is one of the oldest traditions practised by Kuwait's forefathers," said the Bank's Chairman Tariq Mohammed Abdul Salam.
"We are glad to support an event that has such historical and cultural significance, and we will continue to do so. We measure our success as a Bank not only by our financial progress but also by the degree to which we can add value to the nation's community through corporate citizenship initiatives,"
he added.
The 20th Annual Pearl Diving Revival Journey is organized by the Kuwait Sea Sport Club and will conclude on July 31st 2008. The pearl industry contributed significantly to Kuwait's economy before the extraction and commercialization of oil. To commemorate this important tradition, the state of Kuwait celebrates the pearl diving festival every July to recognize the endeavors and courage of pearl divers.
Participants - mostly Kuwaiti youth from sea-faring and fishing backgrounds or enthusiastic divers - are first trained in the techniques of pearl diving and undergo intensive practice before testing their diving skills in Kuwait's rich sea to search for exquisite pearls.
