Middle East newspaper design on focus in USA

For the first time Middle East and the Arabic design will have a special session in the next Society for News Design Congress in Las Vegas next September.

Last year in Boston the congress had more than 700 attendee from all over the world and basically the 3 days discuss all content that involve design for newspaper and online. All theses characteristic make the event the most important for design in newspaper in the world.

The effervescent media scenario in Middle East and mainly in UAE had captured the attention of journalist and designer worldwide for our region. In this special session Gulf News the leader English language in UAE and the tabloid format Arabic language Emarat Al Youm will have a special panel where both newspapers present the successful trajectory with a strong design orientation in their publication.

Gulf News had the first redesign in 2003 following a professional orientation as Mario Garcia Media and the design had an influence in a local media and other publications.

Emarat Al Youm is the youngest and the first compact size daily in Arabic language tabloid newspaper, launched in 2005 from Awraq Publishing and a reference in design tabloid for others publication in Arabic. The large use of graphics and illustrations make the newspaper dynamic, easy and fast to read. organized design based on a two-speed architecture: briefs and macro-formats in an upper deck and longer features in the main area. The new editorial concept has added a new section with service oriented journalism and news-you-can use for a diverse and multinational Arab-speaking audience. Emarat had a recent redesign did by Innovation's team.

The presence Gulf News and Emarat Al Youm newspapers in the Congress represents the evolution and the attention of design that Middle East publications are giving to their products. UAE readers have now a plenty of option from newspaper to magazine with a high level of graphic design and also good quality of printing. In this competitions readers are the best benefited

International designer Tarek Atrissi will have a special session to show the Arabic Culture and typography. Born in Beirut, Tarek Atrissi has worked and studied in Lebanon, The Netherlands, Qatar, Dubai and the United States. He Holds a BA in Graphic Design with distinction from the American University of Beirut; a Masters of Arts in Interactive Multimedia from the Utrecht School of the Arts in Holland and an MFA in Design from the School of Visual Arts in New York- where he studied under people like Steven Heller, Paula Scher and Stefan Sagmeister.

This is the 30th Annual Workshop. In September, 1979, the first Workshop was held in Chicago. Last year the event was in Boston. In 2009, the Workshop will be held in Buenos Aires. Currently we're scheduled through 2011 (Denver in '10, followed by St. Louis in '11). If you think your organization would like to put on a Workshop, contact SND headquarters. This year in Las Vegas the Workshop will be held at the Red Rock Casino Resort Spa. It is a new hotel, about 13 miles off the Strip. It has exceptionally nice and spacious guest rooms and some of the best meeting space we've seen. It is an upscale resort and casino with eight restaurants and a food court. There's a nightclub, a 72-lane bowling alley and a 16-screen cinema.SND Congress this year will be together with Associated Press Managing Editors and Associated Photo Managers Conference. SND registration gets you into any APME or APPM.
