Labour Fund boosts healthcare training initiative with CHS

Against the backdrop of a growing demand for trained nursing personnel and health technicians, the Labour Fund moved its training initiative for the sector up one notch by signing an agreement today with the College of Health Sciences(CHS) for the training of 150 nursing staff and 80 allied health technicians.

The BD3.2m initiative was signed by Acting Chief Executive Mr. Abdulellah Ibrahim Al Qassimi and the Dean of the College of Health Sciences Dr. Shawqi Abdulla Ameen will open the door for career-seeking Bahrainis to make promising strides in the healthcare sector which is currently seeing a global surge in the demand for qualified professionals.

The agreement assigns the CHS the tasks of both providing world-class training and provides the graduates with employment opportunities.

The Nursing programme lasts 4.5 years at a total cost of BD16,000 per candidate while the Allied Health Technicians programme lasts 3 years with a cost of BD10,000 per candidate.

Attending the signing ceremony are the College of Health Sciences Board of trustees, the Assistant Under-secretary for Primary Health Care and Public Health Dr. Mariam Al Jalahema, senior Health Ministry officials, members of the College of Health Sciences Board for External Projects and the executive management team of the Labour Fund.

"This project is part of the Labour Fund's ongoing Skills Gaps Training initiative investment in Bahraini human resources development with guaranteed and rewarding employment opportunities to follow," said Labour Fund's Acting Chief Executive Abdulellah Al Qassimi, "Bahrainis have a tradition of compassion that has served the Kingdom well in building a world-class State healthcare facility and powered the private healthcare sector in recent years. By tapping into this trait and connecting it to the best knowledge resources in healthcare training, we will have the best nursing and technical staff. It is quite sensible to believe that these young Bahraini talents have what it takes to build a successful career in this sector."

"This second round of student sponsorships by the Labour Fund for the healthcare sector is a welcome attempt to add numbers and depth to the training initiatives for this sector," said Dean of the College of Health Sciences Dr. Shawqi Ameen.

"The CHS is a provider of high quality, efficient and comprehensive healthcare training and we are committed to partnering the LF in its Healthcare Human Resource Development Programme. We have a rich vein of expertise in training Bahraini health sector personnel since our establishment in 1976. Since then, we have continued to respond to changes in the healthcare sector and demand levels by introducing new fields of study and modernising existing programmes."

The Labour Fund's Healthcare training projects aim to train and equip applicants in four major tracks; General and Speciality Nurses, Allied Health Technicians, and Healthcare Assistants over the next 4 years.

The key training providers affiliated with this programme are the Ministry of Health's College of Health Sciences and the Royal College of Surgeons-Ireland - the Medical University of Bahrain.
