RCSI - Medical University of Bahrain appoints top surgical post

Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) announced the appointment of Dr. Niall O'Higgins as the Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, and Director of Senior Cycle for the Medical University of Bahrain.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Niall O'Higgins said:
"I am very pleased to join a team of expert people, brilliantly led by Professor Kevin O'Malley, who have accumulated vast experience in medical teaching, training and practice throughout the globe."
"I am attracted by the intense commitment of the staff of the Medical University of Bahrain to ensure that the quality of the graduates is as high as anywhere. For a medical school, educational excellence, so strongly supported by His Highness the Prime Minister, is the essential foundation for raising standards of medical care for patients."
Kevin O'Malley, President of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Medical University of Bahrain commented:
"We are delighted that Dr. O'Higgins is joining us and his appointment is a real boost for the Medical University of Bahrain. He comes at an exciting time as we strive to prepare our students for a lifetime of professional service and to provide them with a sound basis for specialist training in the Gulf region and in the wider international medical arena."
The Medical University of Bahrain (MUB), a constituent of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RSCI), officially opened in Bahrain in October 2004 to provide healthcare education and training to world standards in Bahrain. Today the University has a well integrated, multinational student body with representatives from 30 different countries. Aiming to set the standards for medical education in the Gulf region, it offers the following programmes:
• Medicine (MB BCh BAO & LRCP & SI)
• Nursing & Midwifery (BSc in Nursing)
• Nursing Access to Bridging Programme
• Nursing Bridging Programme
• MSc in Nursing
• MSc in Health Care Ethics and Law
In addition, RCSI provides a full range of courses and examinations at postgraduate level.
The School of Dentistry is planned to be opened in the near future.

In September 2006 the school of Nursing has opened its doors for students where it is considered the first non governmental nursing school in Bahrain that gives a bachelor's degree and other schools in the fields of pharmacy, physiotherapy and dentistry will be added to the campus at a later phase.
