German Working Group Asian Games 2006 Qatar continues its activities
Following a very successful visit to Qatar by representatives of German architects & engineers in November 2000, a German Working Group Asian Games 2006 Qatar was set up on the initiative of Martin Bay, president of Lahmeyer International, Germany's largest engineering group.
During sessions in Germany and a fact-finding mission to Doha in May this year, about 50 companies such as Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, ABB, Bilfinger & Berger, KfW, Ferrostaal, Giesicke & Devrient, Detecon, EMF Food Industries and GATO have so far pledged their support for the initiative.
'For Doha to host the 2006 Asian Games is a great challenge for the State of Qatar and a race against time, but a great opportunity to become the Gulf's sporting capital', said Martin Bay. Germany has world class companies in the field of planning, design, construction and supply of sporting and tourist facilities and related services, which are eager to join hands with Qatar in order to achieve the great goal.'
The Asian Games are the second largest sporting event of the world involving more than 10,000 athletes and officials outnumbered only by the Olympic Games.
More than hot air?
According to Cargolifter AG, Berlin, the German airship engineering company is negotiating with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharja the erection of logistics centres in these Emirates.
The Crown Prince of Dubai, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a spokesman for the company claimed, has voiced his particular interest in the project and was prepared to do business with the German airship builder and logistics provider.
CargoLifter AG was set up in 1996 and employs some 400 blue and white collar workers. With the CargoLifter airship as a 'flying crane', this multi-modal transportation system can carry out heavy load transportation while needing almost no infrastructure, providing solutions to problems in the large and heavy load sector. The desert would be an ideal operation field. The first CargoLifter airships will hopefully be on the market in two to three years time.
