No. 1 destination of German exports again was Saudi Arabia (€1.67 billion) followed by the U.A.E. (€1.47 billion) und Egypt (€697 million). Germany mainly sold machinery, electrical equipment, cars and iron and steel products to the Arab countries.
On the other hand, German imports again fell by 32.5 % from € 4 billion to € 2.7 billion. The Arab countries' share of total German imports remained at the level of the 1st half of 2001, i.e. at 1.1 %. More than two thirds of German imports from the Arab world comprise crude oil (70.4 %). Crude oil imports from the Arab area shrunk again by 18.7 % to 10.2 million tonnes (1st half of 2001: 12.6 million tonnes). Due to the slightly lower price of crude oil, the value of crude oil imports actually decreased by 31.1 % (or €855 million) to €1.9 billion. The foremost suppliers were Libya before Syria, Saudi Arabia and Algeria.
In the 1st half of 2002, Germany again achieved a substantial surplus in its trade balance with the Arab countries, which, compared with the same period of last year, rose from €2.65 billion to €4.6 billion in the 1st half of 2002.
Trade volumes from Germany to Arab countries, January - June 2002
German exports to the Arab countries rose by 10.2 % or €697 million in the first half of 2002. This represents 2.3 % of total German exports, as compared to 2.4 % in the same period of last year.
