Close on the heels of being elected as a member of two important bodies of Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Arab Emirates has achieved another honour in the global postal community with the Postal Operations Council (POC) appointing it as its Deputy Chairman for 2009-2012.

Greece is the Chairman of the POC.
The 40-member Postal Operations Council deals with technical and operational issues.

It promotes the introduction of new postal products and makes recommendations to member countries concerning standards for technological, operational or other processes.

Its agenda includes helping postal services to modernize and upgrade their products.

"It is indeed a great honour for the UAE to be elected the Deputy Chairman of the Postal Operations Council, an important and powerful body that helps shape international postal policies from a global perspective,"

said Abdulla Al Daboos, President of Emirates Post Holding Group.

"To Emirates Post, this represents a great opportunity to make its presence felt at the international level."

"Being elected as the Deputy Chairman of such an influential body reflects the UAE's prominent standing among the global community," commented Ibrahim Bin Karam, CEO of Emirates Post.

"Emirates Post takes this post very seriously and our representatives at POC will ensure that postal policies keep in mind the needs of developing countries, especially in the Arab world."

The Postal Operations Council (POC) has been restructured and reorganized to bring in greater efficiency and better functioning.

Four core committees have been formed to handle the key areas of letterpost, parcels, postal financial services and standards & technology.

The UAE, as the Deputy Chairman, will play a key role in shaping the policies governing all these critical areas.

The UAE is also a member of UPU's Council of Administration (CA), which ensures continuity of the UPU's work between Congresses, supervise its activities and study regulatory, administrative, legislative and legal issues.

The Council approves the biennial budget and the accounts of the Union.
