New Ghorfa president elected

To the surprise of quite a few observers, Dr. Günter Rexrodt, economics minister in chancellor Kohl's cabinet from 1991 to 1998, was elected new President of Ghorfa, the influential German-Arab trade association.

At their general assembly in Berlin on October 7, the 23 newly installed German and Arab members of Ghorfa's presidium opted for the career politician from Berlin instead of Dr. Mohamed Al-Sady, the successful Basrah-born businessman resident in Nuremberg.

Dr. Rexrodt, who is a national executive member and chairman of the Berlin branch of the Free Democrats, joined Ghorfa only very recently. His party had hoped in vain to become a coalition partner in the new German government after the general elections on 22 September. But it achieved a meagre 7.2 % instead of its much advertised target of 18 % of the votes cast.
Dr. Rexrodt, MP, is also a member of the B.o.D, WMP EuroCom, Berlin and of several supervisory boards.

New vice presidents of Ghorfa are Herr Dietrich von Berg, a respected Stuttgart-based lawyer, and Dr. Jürgen Holz, a renowned ME specialist and fluent Arab speaker, who after 15 years with the hapless Berliner Bank joined the Board of Windhorst, Berlin, earlier this year.

Dr. Al-Sady remains a member of the Ghorfa presidium and pledged to give his continued support to the association. It was acknowledged that it was Dr. Al-Sady, who, taking over presidency in 1998, had salvaged Ghorfa from a long period of stagnation and internal financial troubles, bringing its membership from some 90 to over 300 companies and individuals.

Today, Ghorfa can count on full support of the German economics ministry and other government institutions, the regionally structured German Chambers of Trade and Industry and the Arab ambassadors in Germany. The five high-profile German-Arab trade forums held annually in Berlin since 1998 were to a large extent the result of Dr. Al-Sady's commitment and enthusiasm. It will be interesting to see what is happening at next year's 6th Forum scheduled for 4th to 6th June.
