Soon, he learnt the whole basic surgical technique on spine including, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, congenital spinal malformation, etc. He also assisted Jean Dubousset in several international meetings and surgical lectures. In 1980, Dr Graf decided to enter into private practice and in 1981, he redesigned and patented a frame to position the patient during spine surgery, in a kneeling position. This frame is still in use, 27 years after it was first made!
That same year, he designed and patented a new retractor with cold light to do lumbar disc surgery. This retractor is still on sale and is used by many across Europe and Asia. This retractor enables a micro disectomy with minimal approach, and avoids hurting the patient, with a larger surgery. From 1983, his main preoccupation is based on lumbar degenerative disc and its resulting complications; although he developed and patented a new brace to treat scoliosis in growing children.
Dr Henry Graf has undertaken several research projects spanning five decades of his career and is currently working on the Retrospective and Prospective Study of Lumbosacral Stabilisation using Supple Stabilisation System and the Development and Study of Animal Models for the Study of Three-dimensional Vertebral Movement and Instability. He is also simultaneously working on the Development of a Standard Test to Characterise the Radiological Signs of Vertebral Instability and the Continuing Long Term Follow-up on Low Back Pain in Post-Operative Instability.
Gerard Strong, HD MPH, says:
'The recruitment of Dr. Graf to join the team of Consultants at MPH represents a further step in our strategy to ensure patients receive specialist surgery from acknowledged International figures who have sub-specialised in specific areas. This ensures patients receive delicate surgery from surgeons who carry out large numbers of this type of surgery, and have developed special levels of expertise in techniques and treatment processes which reduces risk and improves outcomes for patients.'
