The hotel has been one of London's landmarks for over a century.
Rather than some of the brasher new arrivals on the capital's hotel scene, which cater to celebrities from the world of music or high fashion, it sets its stall out as the grand old dame of the West End.
A stone's throw from Buckingham Palace and a short stroll from Horse Guards, Westminster and Whitehall, the Ritz appeals to a more refined clientele.
The guests are a generally slightly more mature crowd, you are unlikely to see families with young children in the corridors.
The hotel also operates a strict clothing policy, which sets the tone for your visit.
On checking in, residents are quietly informed that, although in their own rooms or in the lobby they are free to dress as they choose, gentlemen should sport a tie, shirt and jacket when in the 'dining' part of the hotel.
This includes when going down for the silver service breakfast in the mornings.
The décor is one of refined elegance. Dark wooden panelling and white marbling are set off by unobtrusive gold leaf trim. The furniture is made of up light cream and pinks, in a mixture of Edwardian comfort and 19th Century French class. Even the carpets feel incredibly expensive, in an understated way.
The walls around the hotel, especially in the principle dining room are covered in hand painted frescos and the plates and covers are of the finest china. A band or pianist are often present to play to guests as they enjoy refreshments or pre-dinner drinks in the bar.
The hotel exudes a sense of history, one can imagine world-altering deals and closed door meetings of the highest level taking place behind these walls, or over port and brandy in a corner of the bar.
While it is definitely a must-stay if one can afford it, visitors from the Middle East should be prepared for one or two slight disappointments. The sizes of the rooms and bathrooms are not to the same proportions as one might expect if one thinks of the five star hospitality sector in the Gulf countries. The basic double room was only just big enough for a couple to stretch out comfortably in.
The business facilities are also almost non-existent. Internet is available, but the 'business centre' at the time of visiting consisted only of one desktop computer squeezed into a converted phone booth in the lobby.
But if one is looking for a night out the Ritz boasts its own Club in the basement, a perfect place to go for either a late night meal after seeing a show or some evening entertainment.
A must, whether guests are going for a sense of quintessential British history, or for a taste of the afternoon teas. Be sure to book early however, even for guests there is a four month waiting list!
The Ritz, London
The Ritz in London is still one of the most recognised hotel names in the business. Visitors to the UK capital go there for one of the famous afternoon teas, or just to walk under the columnades by Green Park in the heart of the Piccadilly/Mayfair districts to see if they can catch a glimpse of a visiting dignitary or sojourning foreign royalty.
