ETA Star International signs MoU with TERI on environmental studies

  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, September 01 - 2008 at 16:21
  • PRESS RELEASE

ETA Star International, a member of the Dubai-based $5bn ETA Ascon Star Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy Research Institute (TERI) of India to explore areas of co-operation in an effort towards sustainable development.

The agreement was signed recently in Dubai by Hameed Salahuddin, Director of the ETA Ascon Star Group and Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri, Director-General of TERI and Chairman of Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a scientific body set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The MoU pertains to co-operation between ETA Star International and TERI in a number of areas including the assessment of buildings to get them LEED-certified in basic, silver, gold and platinum ratings. The agreement enables ETA Star International to provide these services to other organizations in the UAE and Gulf region.

The other areas of co-operation include conducting environmental impact studies, energy audits of commercial, residential and industrial units, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) studies and reducing carbon footprint in the UAE.

Commenting on the agreement, Hameed Salahuddin, Director of the ETA Ascon Star Group, said:
"With the UAE witnessing rapid development, sustainability is a key area of concern. Our agreement with TERI clearly demonstrates ETA Star International's commitment to sustainable development."

Dr. Pachauri, who shared Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC with former US vice-president Al Gore in 2007, said:
"Meeting only the requirements of the present without attention to the future generations cannot be called real development. Over the years, lessons in human history have shown us the chaos and destruction we can create. They are clear signals which demonstrate how important sustainable development is to the future of mankind."

"TERI's co-operation agreement with ETA Star International will go a long way in changing the perception of sustainable development in the region and make its growth more meaningful," he added.
