The 'Cool UN' initiative, which encourages UN staff members to wear casual clothing, was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in an effort to reduce the use of air conditioning and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
The programme, which discourages the use of jackets and neckties, helped the organisation save significant energy during the trial period through turning up the thermostats by 2C in the UN offices.
Dr Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director, Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City, said:
"Dubai Knowledge Village continues to launch initiatives that aim to safeguard the environment. Employees at the cluster including our business partners, are encouraged to be part of our mission to save energy by wearing light clothing instead of suits and turning up the thermostat during summer. We hope our efforts will not only have a sustainable impact on our immediate surroundings but also motivate others to emulate our example."
In 2007, Dubai Knowledge Village in partnership with another TECOM Investments firm Energy and Environment Park (Enpark), installed the region's first-ever solar power tracking device to utilise renewable energy sources.
Early this year, DKV in collaboration with TECOM's Sustainable Energy and Environment Division (SEED) phased out the use of halogen lamps within its facility, aiming to reduce at least an average of 174 tonnes of CO2 emission annually.
