Environment Society of Oman, Rolex Awards to host talk by UK inventor of world's first 'black box' for wild animals

British zoologist Rory Wilson, creator of the world's first cross-species logger system for wild animals, will speak in Oman next week at a public lecture organized by the Environment Society of Oman and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise.

The free talk will run from 9pm to 10pm on Saturday, September 20, at the Grand Hyatt in Muscat.

Wilson, who won a Rolex Award - one of the world's most prestigious philanthropic awards - in 2006 for developing the revolutionary tracking system, will speak about its development, its success with mammals, birds and fish in diverse environments, and recent testing on the Arabian leopard in Oman.

Wilson's lightweight, miniaturized tracking device has been compared to the 'black box' flight recorder.

It weighs between 30 to 48 grams and measures an animal's activity along three axes - forwards, up and down and sideways - simultaneously up to 32 times a second.

With a built-in compass, the device provides information about the animal's speed, direction and position, generating a daily diary of its activity.

The diary helps wildlife professionals determine behaviour patterns, location and, for the first time, the energy expenditure of different species.

As many conservation issues involve animals that are expending too much energy, Wilson's device is vitally important.

Additionally, Wilson's 'Daily Diary' can work in areas where conventional GPS systems cannot operate, including dense forests, underground or in the ocean.

It has been used to record the diving activity of lemon sharks in the Caribbean, seals in the cold depths of the Antarctic seas, cheetah in Namibia, penguins and cormorants.

Wilson's tests on the Arabian leopard in Oman were conducted with the support of the Office for the Conservation of the Environment, Diwan of Royal Court, and the Omani Mammals Breeding Centre, Royal Court Affairs.

The Rolex Awards for Enterprise provided the support needed to develop and test Wilson's revolutionary invention.

The Rolex Awards, which reward individuals around the world working to advance human knowledge and well-being, are presented to five Laureates and five Associate Laureates each series.

For the first time in the programme's 32-year history, the Awards will be presented in the Middle East this year - at a ceremony in Dubai on November 18, 2008.

Rolex Awards representatives will also speak at the lecture.

Rebecca Irvin, head of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, will also speak at the lecture on Saturday.

About the Rolex Awards for Enterprise
The Rolex Awards for Enterprise were initiated by the late André J. Heiniger, former chairman of Rolex, in 1976 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of the company's greatest technical achievements, the waterproof Oyster chronometer, and to encourage human endeavour.

The Awards aim to foster a spirit of enterprise in individuals around the world by supporting outstanding efforts in areas that advance human knowledge and well-being. The Awards provide financial assistance to people embarking on new ventures or pursuing ongoing projects, individuals who typically work outside the mainstream and often have no access to traditional funding sources.

About the Environment Society of Oman (ESO):
ESO is the only environmental non-governmental organisation in Oman. ESO seeks to protect the natural and human environments through the enhancement of environmental knowledge and the promotion of sustainable consumption and production practices at the community, business and decision-making levels.
