  • PRESS RELEASE

The UAE Ministry of Economy (MoE) conducted inspection tours to the Fruit and Vegetable Market and Carrefour and Lolo Hypermarket in Ajman.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of Consumer Protection Department, headed the visits to monitor prices during the Holy Month of Ramadan. He warned retailers against price manipulation and urged them to ensure that prices are maintained at stable rates during Ramadan.

The consumer protection team inspected the prices of vegetables and fruit and noticed commitment in showing the labels and the prices were fixed. Carrefour which had raised prices of chicken was warned and asked to visit the Ministry's office in Ajman to justify this issue.

As part of the initiative to ensure price stability, the ministry is also co-ordinating with co-operatives and major retail outlets to prepare a cost price food basket for consumers. Teams from the different offices of the ministry are inspecting retail outlets all over the UAE during Ramadan to ensure that prices remain at agreed levels and prevent any possible manipulation by traders.

Mr Al Nuaimi said that the Ministry is on the lookout to enhance the stability of the market and control price rise. He added that during Ramadan some traders tend to take advantage of the situation and increase prices, which the Ministry - through its offices across the UAE - is committed to preventing.

Al Nuaimi said that the Ministry of Economy will take strict action against retailers and suppliers and warned them against any exploitation during the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr. Violators will be punished according to consumer protection law number (24), the Ministry cautioned. Penalties could even lead to closing down of violating outlets.
