Dubai Women's College (DWC) organized several activities during the first three weeks of the academic year which coincided with the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

The events were planned by the Student Affairs department and were targeted at new and returning students.

Earlier last week, Mrs. Salma Hareb, CEO of Economic Zones World and Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA), addressed all new students on the issue of empowering National women and the significant role they play in the development and growth of the local and regional economies.

"Everyone of you should plan her future and her career starting from the first day at the College as it is important to have a goal and direction in life," she said.

Hareb asked students to be bold and not to hide behind culture, traditions, family and 'cool gang' barriers.

DWC's new students were also welcomed by Dr. Howard Reed, Senior Director at the Higher Colleges of Technology and Director of DWC, and DWC's senior management team during the first week of the academic year.

Dr. Reed asked students to take their academic life at the College seriously and to invest all the time they have in getting themselves ready for having meaningful careers and contributing to Dubai's growing economy.

Student Affairs Department also included sessions on preparing new students to properly handle college life and get acquainted with the campus services.

DWC Student Counselors met with the new students to familiarize them with different aspects of the services Student Counselors offer on campus.

Last week, new students attended a lecture by Ms Asia Al Zarooni, Dietician from the Department of Health and Medical Services, who spoke about eating habits and healthy lifestyle during Ramadan.

The College will also be hosting an Iftar dinner on September 18th for its students, faculty, staff and several visitors.

The Iftar dinner will host more than 300 people and will include several entertainment and charity programs including a mini bazaar, a fastathon where non-Muslim non-fasting DWC faculty members fast for one day and challenge their students who in turn donate money for the winners.

The money collected is used for DWC's Financial Aid Student Fund.

"Student activities and events play an important role in the life of a college student as they often provide information that can help them understand themselves or some aspect of the world around them better. This equips them to make informed decisions now and in the future about work, lifestyle, etc," noted Mary Lackie, Student Affairs Supervisor.

"We are providing opportunities for students to develop important skills that they will need once they leave college. Students learn organizational and time management skills as well as how to work successfully in teams. It is a safe environment to 'practice the future,' and by having some experience, students will be able to take on responsibilities in the workplace quicker than they might otherwise and be fully contributing members of their future work teams," Lackie added.
