Department of Municipal Affairs to participate in The Excellence Awards

The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), has organized a number of workshops to support its preparations for the new government entity's first ever participation in the highly regarded government performance awards - Abu Dhabi Awards for Excellence in Government Performance (ADAEP).

The Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance is the most visible project of the new department that was established under the auspices of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council, which set out to organize and develop all aspects of excellence in government performance while effectively implementing a programme that creates sustainable value improvement to the performance of Government operations.

The DMA's senior management has already completed an initial internal assessment and a series of workshops in order to ensure a clear and timely understanding of the criterion and award framework, while helping to improve the organization's practices, capabilities, and performance based on a proven model of Excellence. Additionally, DMA's 'criteria champions', have completed two day workshops to ensure thorough comprehension of the award requirements and procedures.

Commenting at the need to participate in the Excellence Awards which marks the department's first year of participating was H.E. Eng Ahmed Shareef, Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs, he said:
"given the organization is still at an early stage in further structural development, it is only natural that we engage in all necessary government programs that are important provided tools, that will enhance our overall departments' continued successful growth and contributions to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi."


H.E. Shareef continued:
"The Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government performance is a rigorous and demanding process, designed, not to create winners or losers, but tactfully focuses the efforts of all government departments and guides them towards achieving the highest standards of government performance and an evolving government system we are elated to be a part of especially during these exciting times rapid development."

About Department of Municipal Affairs:
The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced operations in May 2007, following the Abu Dhabi Executive Council's decision to integrate the Emirate's municipal system. As a new government entity, the Department of Municipal Affairs was created to lead, coordinate and oversee three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The DMA has a regulatory role while the service delivery and operations are at the municipality level.

On the 5th of May 2008, the Department of Municipal Affairs along with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and Western Region Municipality embarked upon a new municipal services journey, with the signing of the historic Municipal Charter which aligns the DMA and three municipalities towards greater collaboration and cooperation.

Under the auspices of the General Secretariat of the Executive Council, a dedicated Department has been established to organise and develop all aspects of excellence in government performance to effectively deliver the aims and objectives of the programme to add sustainable value improvement to the performance of Government operations. The Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance is the most visible aspect of the programme and will provide a major platform in supporting the Vision for Abu Dhabi. The Award promotes: Understanding of the requirements for excellence in government and competitiveness for improvement throughout the government service, sharing of information and knowledge of successful improvement strategies.
