"The Middle East region is fast approaching the billion dollar mark in terms of turnover, and we're seeing the emergence of a local industry that is looking to cater to the passions of Arab gamers. This development can only be good news for the gaming scene as a whole, as more and more people get into gaming. Gaming is the world's largest entertainment industry by revenues and we want to see more local developers get stuck in!"
said Ian Livingstone.
Upon its release in 1996, Tomb Raider redefined gaming thanks to its revolutionary graphics, inventive game play, and involving storyline. Tomb Raider topped the British charts a record three times and contributed greatly to the success of the Playstation. Now in its twelfth year, Tomb Raider is still going strong; the eight instalment of Tomb Raider, named Underworld, will be released in the Middle East in October.
Livingstone met with the regional gaming trade at GAMES 08, including retailers, distributors, as well as a number of recently established games developers from Dubai. Part of his key note focused on the need to promote and nurture the creative talent that would become the next generation of gaming pioneers.
"It's been wonderful to come over to Dubai, to see the passion that people have here for gaming. With the industry becoming more socially acceptable and even a family pursuit thanks to the hardware pioneered by Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony we're rewriting how games are perceived worldwide. I personally hope and believe that the Middle East has much to contribute to advancing the industry and I'm looking forward to my next trip over to the region."
