11 representatives were chosen by secret ballot from nominations submitted by foodstuffs trading members of DCCI over the last two months, while a twelfth member was selected by a show of hands from three nominees who received equal votes.

Mr Ahmed Al Banna, Assistant Director General for Studies and International Affairs at DCCI, chaired yesterday's meeting.

He said: "This is an important step forward for both the Foodstuffs Trading Business Group and DCCI. The group's newly elected representative committee will work to articulate member interests more effectively and establish a clear and productive dialogue with the Chamber, and other local and federal authorities."

Elected to sit on the executive panel of the Foodstuffs Trading Business Group are: Vasi Khan, GM of Sahar Enterprises; David N. Rushton, GM of Freshly Frozen Foods; Paul Susan, GM of Carrefour Hypermarkets; John Francois Andrist, Director of Hakan Agro Commodities Trading Company; Farook Kassim, MD of Al Boghari General Trading; Abdulla Bin Mesher, owner of Al Muhairi Foodstuffs; Mitkal Atallah, owner of Al Ain Coldstores; Majid Habib, MD of Mid-Link General Trading; Majid Kazim, MD of Al Kazim Group of Companies; Hadi Abuseedo, owner of Abuseedo Trading; LM Lal of Federal Foods; and Padam Agrawal, Director of Bombay Foodstuffs Trading.

Members of the representative committee will meet early next month to decide individual functions and responsibilities.

Committee member Abdulla Bin Mesher, of Al Muhairi Foodstuffs, said that he hoped the newly elected committee would have a positive influence on decision makers in the sector.

Working to boost imports and re-exports, and encouraging more stringent health and quality standards to protect consumers, as well as more opportunities for Arab Nationals were among his priorities for the group.

A total of seven new Dubai-based business groups were set up in October and November. The new groups represent the land transport sector, pharmaceuticals and health equipments trading, building materials trading and manufacturing, printing and publishing, food and beverages manufacturing, exhibitions and conventions, as well as foodstuffs trading.

During phase two of the new business group programme, each group will reconvene at DCCI to elect a panel of between eight to 12 representatives.
