Recognising the importance of tapping into global trends that improve the scope of the Jordanian developer repertoire, the public and private partnership hopes to continue to bring in technical experts as a long-term initiative.

"Jordan's developers have continued to play a significant role in software services and creating many applications across the entire Middle East, particularly with e-Learning and e-Government application development. Noting the global trend to use Open Source Software in these fields, it was appropriate for Jordan's public and private sectors to join together to deliver important information to further the growth of the software and services sector," said Mahmoud Ali Khasawneh, Chief Information Officer, Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

Jordan's development community supplies many of the outsourced skills and services that are used throughout the Middle East and broadening these will not only create a regional center of expertise, but complements the national ICT strategy to develop an ICT sector that contributes to the larger part of the Jordanian economy. Much of the development and implementation work carried out in projects for GCC government's uses up-to-the minute technology and trends, so it is important that Jordan's developers have skills to match these requirements.

There has been rapid take up of Open Source Software from governments and learning institutions around the world, and recent converts to Open Source Software include the governments of China, the UK and Germany. Included at the event will be speakers from government, OSS advocates and the business community who will relay their experience with the technology first hand. Not only did delegates hear about the myths and benefits about the software, but will be privy to the reasoning behind the decisions of those who have chosen to build their infrastructure with such software.
