"We are overwhelmed with the response we have received for GAMES 08, the figures show that the industry has been steadily growing by 30% year on year due to new entrants, wider range of software and generic market growth, and we are hoping that this event will assist in future developments,"
said Tim Stokes, Sales & Marketing Director, PlayStation Division, Sony Gulf FZE.
"At present the total value of shipments coming into the Middle East is worth around $750m which represents around 2% of the global industry, judging by the visitor numbers we have experienced we are confident these figures will continue to rise," added Stokes
Retailers including Virgin Megastore, Geekay Games, and Plug-Ins were awarded for their contribution to the gaming sector, and media outlets, Charged, Dubai Eye and ME Gamers were also recognised for their contribution to the industry at the GAMES 08 Gala Dinner.
The event saw exciting presentations from the leading publishers in the industry as well as both Sony and Microsoft, and provided the region's trade with an insight into what to expect for the coming months, the show then concluded with gaming fans flocking to GAMES 08 to try out some of the upcoming titles including Gears of War 2, Tomb Raider Underworld, Midnight Club Los Angeles, Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2, FIFA 09, Little Big Planet, and Guitar Hero: World Tour.
"We've had an incredible response to the very first cross-industry gaming event in the Middle East," said Armagan Demir, Head of the Entertainment & Devices Division, Middle East, Microsoft Gulf.
"There's so much passion and interest in gaming, and we do hope that GAMES 08 is the start of a drive to give gaming in the Middle East the platform it needs to truly thrive as an industry."
