Greening the tourism sector in Dubai

Success precedes responsibility and taking on the onus of 'Going Green' is the tourism sector, which is growing at a fast pace and is positively driving employment and income levels.

Presently 8.5% jobs in the UAE are travel and tourism oriented as the sector is expected to grow 8%.

This topical report takes the lead in the latest September-October issue of CSR Al Youm newsletter published by Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Centre for Responsible Business (CRB).

This issue also looks at hotels and resorts that have made the sustainable model work in the UAE by adopting environmentally-friendly measures while emphasising on why responsible sourcing is important for businesses in Dubai, the advantages it gives and highlights a company that has been implementing such actions with great benefits.

Also included is an article on five steps of designing a sustainability policy which includes a quick start guide for companies to start witnessing how easy it can be to start to draft and implement such a policy and will be of interest to various business sectors.

The new issue takes a look at the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) tool, which will help companies measure their impact on society by helping them assess the social and environmental contributions, it also highlights a CRB-commissioned research on 'Consumer's View of CSR in Dubai' that takes into account how CSR affects purchasing decisions, brand loyalty etc.

This edition of CSR Al Youm also includes news about the launch of the 4th round of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Business Award (MRM Award) new category of Corporate Social Responsibility that is dedicated to honouring companies that successfully implement CSR initiatives and applications for which will close on November 20, 2008.

It also includes news about Dubai Municipality and Emaar joining a water efficiency programme; and forthcoming CSR events with exciting new workshops, seminars and conference presentations by the Centre for Responsible Business listed for the rest of the year.
