Mr. Mohammed Bin Shaker, Assistant Director
General, Zones, Emirates Post, and Mr. Abdullah Al Shamsi, head of education affairs, Ministry of Education, gave away prizes and certificates to winners and school supervisors.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mohammed Bin Shaker, said:
"The World Post Day is a major event on the annual postal calendar. The UPU has played a pivotal role in international postal affairs, formulating laws to ensure freedom in postal matters and fostering financial and cultural links between the member countries. At Emirates Post, we look at this occasion as a way to reaffirm our commitment to the community by providing convenient and user-friendly services."
Mr. Salem Al Shaya, Assistant Director General, Operations, Emirates Post, read out the World Post Day message of Mr. Edouard Dayan, Director General of UPU, who called for modernizing postal services so that they can continue to contribute fully to economic and social development of nations.
"Despite dire predictions regarding the survival of posts, postal services are alive and well. E-mail and the Internet have not replaced them, but have instead created new opportunities. The postal sector provides a precious service, not only to anyone who buys or sells online, but also to people not yet able to make full use of the new technologies and for whom the mail is a vital link with the outside world.
"The roadmap adopted by the UPU encourages operators to provide a faster, more reliable service in order to always better meet the needs of all users, private customers and businesses alike. The UPU's priorities over the next several years will include strengthening universal service, quality of service, modernization of payment services, implementation of an addressing policy, the environment and sustainable development," said Dayan.
The function concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates to the winners and participants of the UPU International Letter Writing Competition for Young People. Supervisors and teachers of participating schools were also given certificates of appreciation.
