  • PRESS RELEASE

Abu Dhabi Airports Company has today announced that Thales, a world leader in mission-critical information systems for the Aerospace, Defence and Security markets, has been awarded the contract to fit out Abu Dhabi International Airport's new air traffic control centre tower (ATCC).

With the construction of the tower already underway and due for completion in 2009, Thales are expected to start integrating the systems and command centre over the coming year.

ADAC Chairman and Managing Director Khalifa Al Mazrouei said: "We look forward to Thales delivering this contract which will help us take a further step in our quest to become a world class gateway airport."

The Thales systems will integrate the most advanced ATM automation features needed for world leading air traffic control as well as airport ground control systems and aeronautical information systems (AIS) and messages switching (AFTN/AMHS).

"With one of the biggest airport infrastructure developments ever conceived taking place in Abu Dhabi, we are thrilled to be part of this history making enterprise by bringing our technical expertise and know how into installing the new systems for the airport's new air traffic control centre," said Richard Deakin, Senior Vice President of Thales Air Systems.

The new 109m, 20-storey tower will be situated in between the existing and the new second runway, which went operational on 12 October 2008, and will take over the role as the nerve centre of the new airport development from the existing tower which stands over Terminal 1.

"As one of the world's leading aerospace systems integrators Thales brings a wealth of experience that we are certain will be translated into developing one of the world's most advanced air traffic control centres here in Abu Dhabi," said Talal Al Jouhi, ADAC's lead negotiator on the deal.

In addition to the control tower deal, it was announced that Thales, recognising the strategic advantages of Abu Dhabi's location to its regional business, has also made a commitment to install its Middle East Support Centre to the Abu Dhabi International Airport Business and Logistics Park.

"Thales' decision to set up its Middle East Support Centre at the airport demonstrates the importance of our facility as a major gateway to the world. We look forward to welcoming and working with them, and introducing other major companies to our world-class facility," concluded Al Mazrouei.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC)
Abu Dhabi Airports Company, ADAC, is a public joint-stock company wholly owned by Abu Dhabi Government. It was incorporated by Emiri Decree number 5, of March 4th, 2006, to spearhead the development of the Emirate's aviation infrastructure. ADAC has officially taken over the operation and management of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain international Airports, as of 28/09/2006. Under its mandate is the re-development and expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport, which includes the new midfield terminal - a facility that will offer a 20 million passenger per year operational capacity when its first phase opens in late 2011.

Abu Dhabi Airport Business & Logistics Park
Abu Dhabi Airport Business & Logistics Park is an intrinsic element in a $6.8bn master plan of projects owned by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC). Spread across 12 sq km around the airport, the business & logistics park aims at promoting diversified private sector investments into Abu Dhabi Emirate and generating non-aeronautical revenues. The park offers one-stop investor-friendly services, world-class corporate amenities and a strategic location in the heart of the Middle East.

The project is planned to be delivered in phases, with construction for Phase 1 having already started in 2007 and scheduled for completion by 2010. Work for Phase 2 will commence by 2011 with all phases expected to be fully delivered by 2015.

Air Traffic Control Centre (ATCC)
Designer and Architect: ADP Ingenierie (ADPi), Abu Dhabi
Contractor: Kumho (South Korea) & Ascon (Dubai) Joint Venture
Operational Height: 21 Storeys
Internal Floor Space (total): 7,400sqm
Tower Cab Floor Space: 135sqm
Fights Handled (per hour): 70 (approx.)

The new Air Traffic Control Complex has been designed to provide the air traffic controllers with a clear sight of both runways and the new fully expanded area for Abu Dhabi International Airport. Due to the length of the runways (4.0km and 4.1 km) and the requirement to see areas that would otherwise be hidden by the roof of the new midfield terminal building, the operational height of the tower cab is equivalent to a 21 storey building - placing the controllers with an eye-level of 105m above the surrounding ground level.

The Visual Control Room (VCR) on level 21 will allow nine staff to operate both runways in a simultaneous operational mode. The lower floors are earmarked for the approach control room, offices, conference facilities, training rooms, a technical library, a simulator room, along with various maintenance and equipment rooms.
