ESMA Director General, Walid Bin Falah Al Mansouri, said the agreements were signed with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International), and specifications organisations in Sudan, Palestine, and Argentina.

The MoUs encourage cooperation in specifications and standards so as to enhance trade exchange and reduce control and testing procedures on reciprocal exports and imports.

Al Mansouri pointed out that cooperation is important in light of changes in global specifications and the growth in modern economic relations. Arab bilateral or uniform cooperation is needed to develop standards and specifications and the mechanism for their implementation.

He also stressed that the new MoUs complement similar agreements already signed with Egypt, Syria, India, Korea, China, and Vietnam, saying:

He said:
"All enhance ESMA's role and pave the way for recognising the UAE's evaluation, conformance, and authentication systems - thus facilitating trade exchange, ensuring the security and safety of goods, and increasing their level of exchange."

ASTM International plays a major role in the global marketplace, covering many industrial and economic sectors and companies working in oil and gas, petrochemicals, construction, materials, chemicals, and consumer goods among others.

Under the MoU, the UAE will adopt ASTM standards, attend technical workshops and training courses, and join the technical committee of ASTM International where its expertise can help develop US standards.

The MoU signed with the Palestinian Specifications and Standards Organisation paves the way for the entry of Palestinian goods and products to the UAE market.

Both parties will recognise conformance and quality marks for products, thus encouraging joint investment opportunities, said Al Mansouri.

Under the Sudan agreement, ESMA and the Sudanese Specifications Authority will exchange information on specifications and standards, conformance certificates of national goods, and grant quality marks for goods to conform with standards.

Joint seminars and workshops will be held to develop the skills and qualifications of both parties.

The agreement with the Argentinian Standards Authority similarly enhances cooperation in standards-related fields.

International Organization for Standardization:

The ISO is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. ISO, a non-governmental organization, has a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates its member countries. Currently, the ISO network is made up of national standards institutes of 157 countries, with one member per country.

Its role is to form a bridge between the public and private sectors, enabling a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society. Its member institutes are from both the government or mandated by the government and the private sector.

The name is derived from the Greek Isis, meaning "equal". This name was chosen to give it a short, all-purpose name because otherwise "International Organization for Standardization" would have different acronyms in different languages ("IOS" in English, "OIN" in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation).

Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology:

Established in 2001, ESMA's vision is to be the pioneering authority in the fields of Standardization, Conformity, and Metrology at regional and international levels and to establish best quality and excellence as guiding principles that support the national economy.

As a full member of the ISO, ESMA's role is to advise all stakeholders about standards development, as well as to ensure the UAE's standards are in line with scientific developments, including ISO standards.

Consistently taking into consideration the social, economic, health and safety interests of the public, ESMA makes certain that the services and products are of the quality and in
conformity with the approved standards. In addition, ESMA spreads awareness of the different standardization activities through various outlets. ESMA's strategy supports the national economy and welcomes in a new era of excellence and quality within the UAE.
