Over one hundred staff members from the airline's Worldwide Contact Centre (WWCC) have just completed an intensive customer care training programme under the Career Progression Programme which is funded by Tamkeen (the Labour Fund) and managed by BDO Jawad Habib consulting (BDOJHC).

In a ceremony held at Gulf Air Headquarters, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Bjorn Naf congratulated the staff members and presented them with certificates. Mr. Naf was joined by senior members of the Gulf Air management.

Mr. Naf said:
"This is another milestone achievement made possible by the joint efforts of Gulf Air and Tamkeen, who together, are committed to providing young Bahrainis every opportunity for career growth and development."

"Our ultimate aim is to create an appropriate and supportive work environment for our staff so that they feel confident they are working for an employer of choice in the Kingdom. We are committed to giving our staff the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge and help them achieve their career and personal aspirations," he added.

The Bahrainis from WWCC received a customised 3-day training programme designed to enhance their sales techniques, communication skills and service to our customers, the cost of which was fully subsidised by the Tamkeen-Career Progression Programme (CPP).

"The Tamkeen-CPP is unique in many ways; it aims at training and enhancing the productivity of employees in the middle income local workforce in the Kingdom of Bahrain, providing a clear pathway to individual career progression and, assures a minimum increase of BD50 in their salary after successful completion of the training programme," added Gulf Air Chief People Officer Mr. Ahmed Al Banna.

"With so much competition in the air travel sector great customer service is a key differentiator in our industry, so training our sales team was a key priority following our move to Bahrain," added Gulf Air Director Customer Service Mrs. Ruth Birkin.

"The training sessions have energised the team and taught them new and effective techniques that can be taken back to the work place and practiced," Birkin added.

Talking about the participation of Gulf Air in the programme, Dr. Ehsan Ghurbal, the CPP Project Manager at BDO Jawad Habib stated: "We are very pleased with the participation of Gulf Air to engage around 500 of their employees to benefit from the Tamkeen-CPP. Gulf Air HR, Training and employees' line managers have been very committed towards the programme. They have been keeping in place all internal logistics for their employees to meet BDO Jawad Habib consultants to conduct the training need analysis and to attend the training courses."

"We would like all other employees to follow their colleagues' path in improving their skills to develop their career and become more productive at their work," Dr. Ghurbal added.

In just a year after beginning its operations from Bahrain, the Gulf Air WWCC now services its customers from 11 countries through dedicated local numbers.

Open from 0600am to Midnight daily, the professionally trained and knowledgeable agents are helping customers from the UK, USA, and the GCC countries with their travel needs such as ticket booking, fare enquiries, hotel bookings, changing travel plans, and any other special requests.

To achieve these objectives, Tamkeen (Labour Fund) will invest (i) in the cost and quality competitiveness of Bahrainis (e.g., reduction of cost of employing Bahrainis relative to expatriates, investment in skill and work ethic development programs of Bahrainis) and tackle employment barriers on both employer and labour market entrants sides through a combination of financial incentives and capability building, and (ii) in supporting the private sector's adjustment to new cost structures by providing access to capital to alleviate short-term cash constraints or improve productivity, and in know-how initiatives that support improvements in productivity and decreased reliance on expatriate labour through spreading management and technical knowledge.
