- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, January 02 - 2003 at 14:01
- PRESS RELEASE
Under the patronage and presence of H.H. Lt. Gen. Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff - President of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), the ECSSR is pleased to announce the holding of its eighth annual conference from January 11 - 13, 2003.
The conference is entitled "Biotechnology and the Future of Society: Challenges and Opportunities" and will take place at the InterContinental Hotel, Abu Dhabi.
Eager to extend its outreach and in support of its mission to bring up-to-date academic expertise to the Arab Gulf region, and in anticipation of a future in which biotechnology is to affect society deeply and in many spheres, the ECSSR is proud to have assembled an exquisite panel of international experts to share their insights and profound experience.
The Eighth Annual Conference, however, sets out to address the key issues involved in the biotechnology debate and to provide the most comprehensive coverage of the ongoing research and activities in the field today.
The rapidity of biotechnological discoveries have wide-ranging socio-economic and ethical implications. Frameworks of social values and the choices of society can determine the agenda of biotechnology research, and the evaluation of its processes and products. The ability to identify and recombine genes is making the gene pool available, for the first time, as a primary raw resource for future economic activity, such as in the development of pharmaceuticals, the production of industrial materials as well as of intangible goods such as specialized knowledge of curing diseases. Applications of biotechnology in the health sector, agriculture, civil security and other fields will require a thorough reassessment of the way we live and how we see the world.
