  • PRESS RELEASE

SmartCity, a joint venture between TECOM Investments and Sama Dubai, is set to grow its global footprint by targeting international investors at Gitex with two major international projects, SmartCity Malta and SmartCity Kochi, which will eventually form part of a global network of knowledge-based business townships.

Fareed Abdulrahman, CEO SmartCity said: "We are seeking to increase our market outreach at Gitex as part of an ambitious expansion plan that will eventually see us developing a global network of knowledge economy destinations.

Our first two townships in Malta and Kochi will play an important role in expanding Dubai's knowledge-based business partnerships at the international level by facilitating opportunities and dialogue with both countries."

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) recently approved an outline development permit for SmartCity Malta and granted permission for construction of the project's first state-of-the-art office block, SCM01.

With tenants expected to begin occupying its top-tier office spaces in 2010, the block will be one of the most sophisticated and energy efficient LEED certified buildings in the country.

On completion, SmartCity Malta will offer a combination of ICT and media office space, hotels, a conference centre, retail, food and beverage outlets, residential units and open public spaces. The $300m township, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, is the largest foreign investment in Malta and is expected to create 5,600 jobs.

SmartCity Kochi, is a joint venture between SmartCity and the Government of Kerala. The $350m township, which has procured 246 acres of land, will eventually become a major destination for international, regional and local knowledge-based industries in the Southern Indian state. With the crucial role India plays in the global IT sector, SmartCity Kochi is ideally located to realise both Dubai's and Kerala's ambitions to foster knowledge economies.

Riding on the success of Dubai's business industry cluster developments, such as Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village, SmartCity aims to develop a series of global destinations for knowledge-based companies. These self-sustained townships feature environments conducive to business, intelligent infrastructure and advanced support systems.
