  • PRESS RELEASE

As a primary partner of Mission Green Earth: Stand Up and Take Action 2008, 600 Barclays colleagues across the UAE made their pledge towards environmental sustainability on Sunday.

Each of the company's seven branches, service centres and offices participated in this landmark moment, spanning from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

Barclays colleagues were unified in their group 'stand up' with Barclays pledging to work towards environmental sustainability across its business operations, by further using recycled materials and conserving energy.

Ahmed Khan, Barclays Chief Executive, GRCB Emerging Markets, who led the stand up, commented on how proud he felt seeing the level of commitment and passion his colleagues had showed in support of this important initiative.

He added:
"Environmental sustainability and in particular addressing environmental landscaping in the UAE has been identified as one of Barclays key sustainability objectives. This objective is perfectly complimented by our involvement with Mission Green Earth: Stand Up and Take Action. I am happy that we have played an important part in this wave of change and am confident that our efforts will have sustainable effects throughout the UAE community."

Under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, Ruler of Dubai, 'Stand Up and Take Action 2008' is part of the ongoing 'United Nations Millennium Development Goals Campaign', consisting of eight goals to be achieved globally by 2015. Environmental sustainability is the seventh goal, with a worldwide tree planting initiative called 'Mission Green Earth' put in motion to drive this goal.

The campaign is supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Humanitarian City. It is being organised by Art of Living and the International Association for Human Values.
