A breast surgeon from the Abu Dhabi-based Lifeline Hospital, Dr Shirali helped set up the breast cancer detection unit at the Al Mafraq Hospital in the capital city.
A member of the Health Education and Behavioural Science Section at the Department of Health and Medical Services (DoHMS), delivered the lecture in Arabic.
Counselling and complementary mammogram screenings were offered by the medical facility Manchester Clinic, while fashion store S*auce raised funds for breast cancer patients through their sale of products such as bags and cup cakes.
The session ended with the experts taking questions from the attendees and clarifying their concerns on the appropriate way to deal with breast cancer.

According to the National Cancer Registry, based at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, 22.8% of diagnosed cancer cases among women in the UAE are breast cancer.
It is estimated that only 30% of the women in the UAE diagnosed with breast cancer are in early stages of the disease, when the chances of a cure are significantly higher and treatment much less invasive.
The average age of diagnosis among Emiratis is 40 to 45, 10 years younger than the European median and about 20 years below that in the US.
