Gulf power show to have dedicated water and environment technology arena
- United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, November 28 - 2001 at 11:43
- PRESS RELEASE
A dedicated water and environmental technology arena is to be introduced for the first time to Middle East Electricity 2002 - the region's premier exhibition and conference for the power and electricity industry - which will be held in Dubai in February.
"Key international players from this rapidly developing sector have expressed interest in the arena and we are in talks with UK specialists who wish to run a conference devoted to the crucial issues of alternative energy sources and the environmental impact of power consumption and development," said Sarah Woodbridge, Project Manager, Middle East Electricity.
"Although alternative energy has long been a poor cousin of more traditional sources throughout the Middle East, governments and utility providers are increasingly examining alternatives as they strive to cope with soaring demand from an increasing population and industrial base.
"Environmental issues are also now coming more to the fore in this region with governments becoming party to international conventions and codes."
Issues to be highlighted in the new arena and conference are solar, wind and hydro-electric power as well as desalination and water treatment.
"Analysts estimate the Gulf currently produces over 40% of the world's desalinated water," said Woodbridge. "The technique has been widely used throughout the region and is a prime contender for future projects aimed at addressing a forecasted 16 billion cubic metres annual water shortfall in the GCC alone."
To date, exhibitors from 33 countries have contracted for Middle East Electricity, which will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from February 3-6, 2002. The show, which has Malaysian participation for the first time in its long history, will also feature 16 national and industry pavilions.
"So far, 6,600 nett square metres has been contracted," explained Woodbridge. "This includes the return of an official French pavilion after an absence of around six years."
