This dedicated facility will be opened Sunday, 2nd of November, 2008. The new building consists of three floors, and has a large donor room for male patients and another room for female donors with a total of twenty donor beds and another four apheresis beds. The ADBB, which is part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at SKMC, is staffed with three doctors, twenty-five technical staff, and five administrators.

Dr. Scott Strong, Acting CEO, SKMC, stated:

'The transfer of the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank to the new building will enhance the services offered to the public and provide a convenient environment for blood donation that should better satisfy our donors. SKMC and Abu Dhabi Health Services Company - SEHA continually strive to meet the highest international standards through the development, modification, and maintenance of clinical services.'

Dr. Laila Abdel Wareth, Chair of Laboratory Medicine at SKMC, stated that 'the transfer was carefully planned for and executed with the help of a multidisciplinary team from Abu Dhabi Blood Bank, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Senior SKMC executives, Facilities, Biomedical Engineering, Information Technology, Occupational health and safety, and Support Services. This was necessary to guarantee the safe transfer of equipment, data and staff and to ensure a safe environment for our donors. The move to the new building will enable us to expand the services offered to our patients and to the community.'

Dr. Naima Oumeziane, head of the ADBB, avowed that 'during year 2007, the ADBB collected 20,000 units of blood and 600 units of apheresis platelets. Moreover, 18,000 units of blood and 515 units of apheresis platelets were collected since the beginning of year 2008. UAE Nationals represent the largest number of donors among the many different nationalities that give blood each year'.

'The act of blood donation is unique, and blood donors are special people. Our volunteers provide nearly all the nation's blood supply for transfusion. There is no substitute for human blood and if all eligible donors give blood twice per year, it would greatly help in maintaining an adequate blood supply for the country. Eligible blood donors can donate blood 3-4 times per year safely,'

she added.

About the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank:
The ADBB provides blood supply that answers the needs of governmental and private hospitals in Abu Dhabi and also supports facilities in other Emirates. Blood transfusion is often needed for patients with accident-associated injuries or burns, those undergoing heart surgery or organ transplantation, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, or other diseases such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.

The ADBB also uses a bus-like vehicle to promote blood drives that reach out to the community by traveling to organizations, public venues, and universities. The ADBB adheres to international blood banking standards, and blood donors are carefully screened to meet strict criteria. All blood that is donated undergoes required testing for infectious diseases. More than 195 donation drives have taken place since the beginning of this calendar year and the number of donor drives is expected to increase with the opening of the new facility and greater usage of the donor vehicle.

The healthcare team at the ADBB thoroughly assesses all donors to assure that the blood donation process is extremely safe. Moreover, it is impossible to acquire any disease by donating blood because only new, disposable, sterilized equipment is used with each donation.
