  • PRESS RELEASE

In 2002 the vision of The Palm became more of a reality to Dubai with 80 per cent of The Palm, Jumeirah's reclamation and 5 per cent of The Palm, Jebel Ali's reclamation having now been completed.

"Throughout the year construction has been taking place 24 hours a day to ensure that the project meets the challenging deadlines set", said Saeed Ahmed Saeed, Managing Director - Projects for The Palm. "We are extremely pleased to say, that as at the end of 2002 we are now ahead of schedule and the majority of reclamation of the first of the two islands is significantly finished".

Saeed continued "All fronds are in place underwater and we have now passed many of the critical stages of The Palm, Jumeriah's reclamation. 2003 is set to be a busy but exciting year for the project and we hope that by the end of the year we will be able to present to you satellite photos displaying the first completed island".

According to Saeed some plots on the residential fronds and crescent are ready for infrastructure and construction to commence, and there are plans to begin building model villas on the top two fronds in early in 2003. "We have experienced and dedicated teams in place taking care of all aspects of the projects construction from the villas to bridges and everything in between. We are aiming to move from phase 1 (reclamation) into phases 2 and 3 (infrastructure and construction) as quickly as we possible can", he continued.

Throughout 2002 The Palm project caught the attention of the worldwide media and made headlines across the globe including in the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States of America. The project has been viewed as an ambitious endeavor for Dubai, yet one that will undoubtedly strengthen Dubai's place on the world map. Buyers have also been quoted as saying that due to its total uniqueness they have chosen holiday homes on The Palm over Aspen, Florida and Monte Carlo.

Satellite photos of The Palm, Jumeirah taken in January 2002 and now a year later in January 2003 show the rapid progress in construction over the last year. The project is currently ahead of schedule and construction of model homes is planned to commence in early 2003.

About The Palm
The Palm involves the creation of the world's largest two man-made islands known as The Palm, Jumeirah and The Palm, Jebel Ali. Located just off the coast of the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the two palm tree shaped islands are expected to contribute to the city's position as a premier global tourist destination. The project will increase Dubai's shoreline by a total of 120km and create a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment opportunities, all within a unique and inspiring setting.

The creation of The Palm is an extraordinary project of grand proportions. Comprised of approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand, each island will eventually support 50 luxury hotels, 2,500 exclusive residential beachside villas, up to 2,400 shoreline apartments, two marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas and cinemas.

The vision of The Palm was conceived by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister. Construction commenced in June 2001 after many years of research and planning. Each island will take approximately two years to be completely raised from the sea. A further two to three years will be required to complete the infrastructure and the buildings. The end-result will be the creation of two virtually self-contained communities within the islands.
